Changes to Gerry's ICQ:
June 30, 2000 (version d44)
- You can specify the font, style, and size of the message text.
- The chat window has an option to use IRC-style method. You can easily switch between the split-window view and the IRC-style view by using the tabs in the window. There is a List of contacts in the IRC-style view. However, this doesn't mean that I've implemented multi-person chatting yet. This is the first step towards it, though.
- You can add people to the various lists by simply typing or pasting their ICQ # into a text field in the Lists Window.
- The contextual menu finally conforms to Apple's guidelines by not having disabled items in it.
- I've added a submenu in the contextual menu to allow the ability to quickly change if someone is in the user's visible/invisible/ignore lists.
- The problem with 0-byte history files has been fixed, I think.
May 8, 2000 (version d43.1)
- Fixed the problem with the event sounds getting mixed up. You may need to reset the sounds in your preferences.
- Added the Contact List Message option to the Actions/contextual menu.
- A bug or two squashed.
May 6, 2000 (version d43)
- Yes, I know it's been a long time... So what.
- There's lots which I haven't tested, so I'm just crossing my fingers... otherwise, wait for d43.1 (or d44 ;) )
- There is a new "Lists" window which contains the "Visible", "Invisible" and "Ignore" lists. Now the people in these lists don't need to be in your main contact list. To edit these lists, open the "Lists" window under the Edit menu. Drag contacts into the list you want them in.
- There is a new option in the Contact Settings window for specifying if you'd like to be notified when a contact in your list comes online. On MacOS 9.0 and later a floating window will appear telling you the contact is online. On earlier systems, a modal window will tell you the same information no matter what application is in the foreground.
- The contact list will now scroll if necessary when you are dragging something onto it.
- I've made a change which I hope will help to prevent the so-called "Spinning Arrows of Death".
- There's a new message type which lets you send your contacts to other contacts in your list (Drag contacts into the list to send)... Such a short sentence for so much work.
- Some bugs fixed.
March 12, 2000 (version d42.1)
March 10, 2000 (version d42)
- It now uses the download folder specified in the Internet Control Panel. Unfortunately, with Navigation Services installed, you can't choose the Desktop :(.
- When quoting messages, it now uses the Quote String specified in the Internet Control Panel.
- I've added the ability to put an image in the background of the contact list window! You specify the image in the "Colours" preferences. You can drag 'n drop an image (although it sometimes doesn't work for dragging image clippings from the Finder) OR you can Paste an image into the preferences.
- I've added the choice of either logging in initially with your previous status, or logging in with a specific status every time you open your user file. Check the renamed "Look and Behaviour" preferences to set it.
February 8, 2000 (version d41)
- I've improved the smoothness of the animation in the About Window significantly.
- I added a new sound event for when the About Window is displayed (In the sounds preferences). More specifically, when "Gerry's ICQ" starts to fade into the distance. If you happen to have a sound file of the Star Wars theme, this would be a suitable place to use it ;)
- The format of the Message History has been changed... again. I've included a simple utility to convert your old history to the new format. Each contact's history is stored in a separate file inside a folder named "<user's UIN> History Folder".
- There is a new version of the Control Strip Module which will display the icons in your Custom Icons file. Thanks a lot to "Geek" for putting up with me and figuring out why it didn't work before.
- There's a new option to require a password to open your user file. It's in the View/Change User Info window in the Security tab.
- There's a new command under the Edit menu which will let you search through ALL of your message histories easily.
- If the user was automatically switched to "Away" mode because they were idle, it will automatically switch them back to their previous status when they are no longer idle.
- I've redesigned the Help HTML files so they can be printed better.
- There's a new item in the Web menu to check for the latest version. I hope for a future version to have this built into Gerry's ICQ. But for now it requires your web browser.
January 18, 2000 (version d40)
- Brand new Control Strip Module! A quick click brings Gerry's ICQ to the foreground and opens the first unread message (If there are any). Click and hold to change your online status. This will replace the functionality of the floating window in the "official" ICQ client (and more). It doesn't use the user's custom icons yet, but I hope to make it do that in a future version.
- Now you can resume file transfers... As long as the file type is of an incomplete file transfer. If your computer crashed during the last file transfer (preventing Gerry's ICQ to set the file type properly), there is a utility provided to manually change the file type of a file to an incomplete file transfer if you want to resume the transfer later.
- It will no longer warn you about sending files with data in their resource fork if the files are of certain known "safe" types (ie. 'SITD', 'SIT!', 'PICT', 'JPEG', 'MP3 ', etc.).
- New option to automatically accept Chat Requests (globally, or on a per-contact basis).
- It looks like I made an error when calculating time zones. Times would be displayed correctly for other people using Gerry's ICQ, but for people using the Mirabilis ICQ, the time zone would be wrong. I've fixed it, but it may take a while for everyone to switch to the new version, and you will have to update everyone's info before their Local Time is displayed correctly.
- Added an option to NOT talk about certain contacts in the Settings window (ie. don't use speach for them).
- CONTROL-SHIFT-V will paste the text in the clipboard as a quotation into a message.
- Bugs fixed.
December 24, 1999 (version d39)
- I've made a new Send Window based on ideas from Jan Peratt. It is now used for regular messages, URL's, Chat Requests, and File Transfer Requests.
- You can move the scrolling text in the 'About' window by clicking and Dragging it.
- The Up/Down arrows keys work to scroll the Message History.
- Bugs fixed.
- Also, to all Icon Set creators, I've added another icon for URL's.
December 9, 1999 (version d38)
- I apologize to those growing impatient waiting for this version. I've been busy working on the new About Window. It's one of the most important parts of an application you know :) I'm sure all you Star Wars fans will appreciate it! If it runs too slowly on your computer, you can hold down the CONTROL key to 'hog' the CPU while it is animating.
- The size of the message history is no longer limited to 32 KB, however, I've imposed a limit of 100 KB for technical reasons, until I can implement a better way of storing the message histories.
- You can now easily use custom icons. To use your own icons, rename the icons file to "Custom Icons" (it must have the file type 'gICN') and place it the same folder as the Gerry's ICQ application. You can edit the icons with ResEdit or any other resource editor. A template file is provided.
- A new option to automatically accept files on a per-contact basis in the Contact Settings window.
November 25, 1999 (version d37)
- New option to automatically set the user's status to 'Away' if they've been idle for longer than a specified number of minutes.
- New option to NOT play sounds while not in "Available" mode.
- You can now adjust the volume of the sounds played in the sound preferences.
- New command in the Edit menu to update all the contacts in the user's list automatically.
- Added Hide IP and Web Aware (though Web Aware was always permanently turned on before). Set these options in the "Security" tab of the user's info window. Versions of Gerry's ICQ before d37 will always display IP addresses regardless of whether they chose to hide their IP address or not.
- Some bugs fixed.
November 12, 1999 (version d36)
- Rubber Banding selection in the Contact List window will now scroll the list.
- Added the ability to hide all offline contacts in the list by clicking a new button in the top-right-hand corner of the main window.
- As of November 8th or 9th, The invisible list seems to be working. I can't take credit for this. ICQ, Inc.'s servers must have been slightly modified which caused it to mysteriously start working.
- Added new Invisible colour for the status colours in the preference window.
- Added option to turn off drawing of the separator lines in the list of contacts.
- Added option to speak who an incoming message is coming from.
- Some small changes and bug fixes.
November 1, 1999 (version d35.1)
- Fixed some bugs.
- Shows the number of selected contacts at the bottom of the screen.
October 30, 1999 (version d35)
- I believe I've fixed the problems with the message history.
HOWEVER, you will need to delete your message history file to get it to work properly again.
- Fixed a minor problem where the Received Message window would automatically disapear at the wrong time.
- Drag-and-Drop is used much more throughout the program now.
- The number of contacts in your list is now displayed below the list. I think it looks much nicer.
- F12 will work the same as COMMAND-DOWN ARROW to read the next unread message.
- New COMMAND-/ is used for the 'Settings...' item in the 'Actions' menu.
- I've updated the Helper Application How To text file to explain why Gerry's ICQ might be useful as a helper application.
October 7, 1999 (version d34)
- I'm using a more efficient method of saving the Message History. However, to do this, I needed to change the format of the Message History file slightly. So older versions of Gerry's ICQ will NOT be able to read the new format of the Message History. But the new version WILL be able to read the old format. This is a little experimental, but it seems to be working. You may want to backup your message history and wait to see if I receive a flood of bug reports ;)
- It now remembers the sorted order of the contact list.
- The order of the countries in the pop-up menu should ALWAYS be in alphabetical order no matter which language they are written in.
- There is a new preference option to ignore mass-messages.
- A bunch of new sound events were added to the Sound Preferences.
- A description of the currently selected sound event is displayed in the Sound Preferences.
- I've enabled the visible/invisible lists once again (And there was much rejoicing!) HOWEVER, there is still a small bug with it. If the person in your visible list is using the Mirabilis client, they will be able to see you. But if they are using Gerry's ICQ, they will not see you. I am still working on it, but it is usable enough that I decided to re-enable the options.
September 26, 1999 (version d33)
- The File Transfer window shows the name of the contact the file is being transferred to/from.
- You can FINALLY specify what country you are from, and view what country other people are from! Matthieu Renault assisted me in doing this to remove some of the tedius typing of all the country names.
- You can now make notes about each contact in their "Get Info" window.
- The Contact Settings window allows you to specify a phonetic pronounciation for a contact's name for when their name is spoken using the Speech Manager.
- I think I've got the Windows Character Translation working for the Euro character. Please let me know if it works.
- It will alert you if you try sending files with data in the Resource Fork.
- Information about received files is stored in their comment which you can read in the Finder by doing a "Get Info..." on them.
- I've put an icon into the Chat Beep button rather than having the word "Beep!" in there.
- I've changed the keyboard shortcut to read the next message to COMMAND-DOWN ARROW. This should work an all keyboards.
- Added a couple new Sound Events.
- The arrow keys work in the Search Results window.
September 8, 1999 (version d32)
- Wonderful new Sound Preferences. This allows for much more expandability so I can add sounds for more events in the future.
- It will work as a Helper Application in your Web browser for the "Add Me" and "ICQ Me" links. Included is a text file explaining how to make Gerry's ICQ a helper application for your Web browser.
- Click-and-Hold contextual menus. No more control-clicking if you don't want to.
- I've started on support for Pages (messages) from Web Browsers. It will receive and display the message for you. But I know it needs a lot of work.
- COMMAND-/ is now used for reading the next unread message. This allows you to read the next message no matter which window is in the foreground. I've removed the ability for the space bar to read the next message. And just so you know, COMMAND-SPACE is allready used for switching keyboard layouts.
- Some bugs fixed.
August 27, 1999 (version d31)
- Added an option to colour the text OR the background. I hope this makes everyone happy!
- A new dialogue window will pop up when auto-prompt-when-changing-status is turned on instead of having the entire preferences window poping up.
- A new Settings window is used to adjust settings for individual contacts. Because of this, several items have been removed from the Actions menu, and moved into the new Settings window.
- You can set it to ignore all messages coming from a specific contact.
- You can set it to send through the server on a contact-by-contact basis.
- The number of contacts in your list is now limited only by the amount of free memory.
- You can have multiple Send Message windows open to the same contact now.
- A few new icons in the Actions menu thanks to Stephen Kirkham.
- I think performance has been improved a little.
August 7, 1999 (version d30)
- 68k Support! This has caused the application's file size to balloon up to 1 Meg since the application contains code for both CPU architectures.
- I've switched from using Internet Config 2.0 to Internet Config 1.4. This will allow users of systems earlier than MacOS 8.5 to use Internet Config-specific features.
- New Icons for the Actions/Contextual menus thanks to Jan Peratt.
- New Web Menu
- Colour coded statuses in the Contact List window! You have to turn this option on in the "Colours" preferences panel.
- Pressing the Space Bar in the Contact List window will behave as if you clicked on the Message button and show you the oldest unread message (if any).
- When resizing the Contact List window it will snap to the row height, eliminating the empty space which used to sometimes appear at the bottom of the list.
- Clicking on any of the text in the row of a contact will now select that contact, instead of clicking only on their name.
- It now sorts the names properly with the non-ASCII characters.
- Fixed the bug to do with people who have information with slashes in their text.
August 7, 1999 (version d29)

- New quote button in the Send Message window so you can quote a message you are replying to.

- It now attempts to re-login if the server says you're not online.
- Uses the status bits instead of specific values when checking remote users' statuses.
- Invisible/Visible lists only partially work right now. It doesn't restore who's in which list. So you'll have to put people in their list each time you start the application. I hope to have this fully functional soon.

- Right now, it doesn't prompt you for a message when you're requesting a chat and instead automatically sends the string "Chat With Me!".
- Also, it automatically accepts any incoming chat request. This is just because I haven't gotten around to implementing the GUI for it yet.
- You can send the commands to change your font, style, colour, etc, but the effect wont be displayed locally. This is because this is my first time working with TextEdit and I've still got some stuff to learn.
